BBC Radio on Linux

TOC Difficulties with Streaming BBC Radio on Linux Using Browser Spoofing to grab the BBC Radio Streaming URLs Playing the BBC Radio Streams with Radio Tray / VLC List of BBC Radio stream URLs Disclaimers / Warnings In one of my idle weekend tinkering sessions, this morning, I contemplated installing Linux [Ubuntu to be precise] on an old iMac I have lying around. Reasons being; said iMac runs OSX El Capitán like a slug on Mogadon and also, I only really use it for listening to the radio, while I’m on my gym.... [ Read More ]
Nostradamus Corner 2016
05 Jan 2016
OK. Let’s get this annual ‘Pantomime of Piss-Poor Prognostication’ out of the way. With last year’s predictions returning a record but still contemptible score of 3⁄10 on the Nostradam-O-Meter®, I could probably beat a typewriter-equipped chimpanzee over the head with a crystal ball until he produced some random gibberish –and still beat that total. But I’ve gone to all the trouble of getting my Mystic Meg outfit out of the wardrobe and squeezing into it.... [ Read More ]
An Exercise in Ultimate Geekiness
04 Mar 2015
The Challenge As proofs-of-concept go, this has got to be worth several zillion Geek Points. I set myself the challenge to update this blog, working entirely on an Android tablet. Might not sound like much of a challenge on the face of it, until you remember that this blog is built using the Static Site Generator Hugo and kept updated and syncronised using Git [neither of which run natively on Android]... Anyway, part of my weekend tinkering of late has been to do with cryptocurrencies: I’ve become quite intrigued by the whole ‘digital goldrush’. As well as working on my own altcoin, I’ve been itching to do some hardware tinkering too.... [ Read More ]
Single-Boot Debian Wheezy on MacBook Pro 4,1
12 Oct 2013
Fresh from all my “right side of the brain” wannabe-artistic efforts of the past couple of weeks, I thought I’d give old left-brain a bit of an outing and let him record how he [finally!] managed to get Debian Wheezy booting as the sole OS on an old MacBook Pro 4,1. Disclaimer: As everything Linux-related I attempt seems to comprise at least twice as much luck, voodoo and chicken entrail interpretation as it does ‘knowing-what-the-fuck-I’m-doing’, this is very much one of those YMMV kind of posts.... Creating an Apple Keyboard Mapping for Debian
01 Jan 2013
old Apple keyboard Old macs never die…. at least in my house where, when they get a bit too long in the tooth to handle the latest versions of OSX, I usually install Debian linux on them [often sans GUI], as that’s what I run on my webservers, so it’s nice to have a Debian box or three lying round the house, so I can practice my l33t *nix skills, without breaking the internet....
